AHLUWALIA - CIRCULATE
fashion upcycling program
UX, Microsoft AI, desktop & mobile
The Brand
Ahluwalia is a multi-award winning British fashion label. To minimize fashion’s notorious carbon footprint, Ahluwalia garments are made with various vintage/surplus/post-consumer/organic/recycled clothing and fabrics. This process gives existing materials a new life through textile and patchwork techniques, making many Ahluwalia pieces one of a kind.
The Program
Ahluwalia partnered with Microsoft to create Circulate – a new and innovative platform designed to bring fashion consumers into Ahluwalia’s production process.
Circulate promotes sustainability in an inclusive, prominent, and accessible way.
Through the platform, the UK fashion community now has the opportunity to contribute their gently-used or unwanted clothing items to an upcoming Ahluwalia collection.
How It Works
Circulate highlights various “open calls”, where the Ahluwalia team requests specific garments that are needed for upcoming Ahluwalia collections.
The consumer submits images or videos of their clothing that match an open call.
Microsoft Computer Vision API then analyzes images of the uploaded garment and assigns facets to it, including color, category, fabric, and size. This helps the consumer move throught the submission process more quickly and efficiently.
The Ahluwalia team then reviews the submissions. If they pass the digital inspection, the consumer receives a shipping label to post their garment to the Ahluwalia studio in London.
Once received at the studio, the clothing then goes through the team’s physical inspection. If it is accepted, then the consumer receives points that can be redeemed for Ahluwalia purchases.
